This term is increasingly used to emphasize the connection between humans and nature. It stresses the risks that critical environmental changes pose for life on Earth and for the continuation of civilization by destabilizing the balance and continuity of natural processes.

According to specialists consulted for the development of this reflectary in Spanish, this expression carries a communicational significance because it strengthens the idea of ecosystems and their interdependence. The term also connects the imbalances of power, social injustices, and ecological deterioration. It provides a systemic approach to the issue and sheds light on the ecological and social effects of the hegemonic productive, consumerist, and extractivist model. On the other hand, it underscores the relation between overcoming planetary boundaries and exacerbating social inequalities. In this approach, ecological deterioration and social crisis are considered to be two sides of the same coin.

Also, eco-social crisis and environmental-social crisis are used interchangeably.
