This is a type of discrimination and oppression towards people with disabilities founded on a system of beliefs in the framework of capitalism. It is based on an ideal of a person where their value resides in their functionality; in their physical, sensory, cognitive, and mental characteristics; and in their productivity or economic contribution. It underestimates and rejects people who do not fit that idea of being normalized.
‘Ableism is evident in, for example, the configuration of urban space, especially buildings and public transportation, which are not adapted to the mobility of people with functional diversity.’ But, it is also evident in the types of relationships that underestimate the skills that a person with some type of functional diversity could develop (Casete, Fernández, Martínez, Fernández, & Momoitio, pp. 53-54).
