This concept refers to the set of interconnected natural elements that affect the development and activities of living beings. The UN Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm in 1972, defined environment as ‘the set of physical, chemical, biological, and social components that can directly or indirectly affect living beings and human activities in the short or long-term’. After this conference, the World Environment Day has been celebrated every year on June 5.
In terms of human impact on the environment, the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) urges decision makers to address the most pressing environmental challenges to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and other international objectives, including the Paris Agreement. Environmental issues include: pollution, soil deterioration, deforestation, desertification, ecosystem alterations, climate change, freshwater scarcity, loss of biodiversity, and the depletion of common natural assets, among others.
