Transphobia

(Transfobia)

This is the term used to define the prejudice, discrimination, and irrational feelings, as well as negative attitudes, towards people that identify as trans. In this sense, transphobia is a type of transhate.

Some examples of transphobia include addressing a person with the incorrect gender; ignoring the pronoun they prefer to use, known as misgendering; systematically and simultaneously referring to a person with their old name, known as deadnaming; or using derogatory terms, such as tranny, to refer to a trans person.

In addition, transphobia is often expressed through negative beliefs or attitudes, hate speech, aggressions, and violence. These factors have led to an increase in crimes. Trans people face serious issues because of this behaviour. On a personal level, it can manifest as self-rejection, isolation, and low self-esteem. Socially, denying their identity, work, housing, and other resources can force them to resort to prostitution or begging to sustain themselves.
