Sexual orientation is defined as the emotional, romantic, or sexual attraction towards others. Sexual orientation is not the same thing as the biological sex assigned at birth or gender identity. Sexual orientation goes from exclusive heterosexuality (desire and attraction towards a person of the opposite sex) to exclusive homosexuality (desire and attraction towards a person of the same sex). It includes various forms of bisexuality.
People who have a homosexual orientation are called gay or lesbian. According to the American Psychological Association, sexual orientation differs from sexual behaviour because it refers to feelings and to each person’s understanding. People may or may not express their sexual orientation in their behaviour. It also highlights that sexual orientation is not a choice; it is a way of life.
Finally, it is important to educate people on the different sexual orientations to reduce prejudice, mainly towards bisexual and homosexual groups.
