Non-sexist education

(Educación no sexista)

This educational approach promotes gender equality and non-discrimination. It recognizes that gender-based discrimination can be learned and unlearned at school and in other spaces. As such, it promotes an educational environment that equally values women and men. It also avoids imposing roles and social mandates that are traditionally assigned based on a person’s sex, and that normally relegate women to an inferior and subordinate position.

This type of education is critical of the role of androcentrism in the different areas of knowledge, such as science, language, and history, and it proposes changes. For example, it emphasizes women’s contribution to science, it highlights women who made history, and it uses inclusive language. It also engages female students in areas that are traditionally thought to be for men, including science, engineering, math, and physics. It also allows male students to partake in areas of knowledge that are normally associated with women, including teaching and nursing.

Additionally:

  • It promotes women’s empowerment and a healthy and equal interaction between sexes in the classroom.
  • It identifies gender stereotypes in the educational process and consciously eliminates them.
  • It raises awareness among the education community (students, teachers, administration, parents, guardians) regarding sexists behaviours.
  • It uses non-sexist educational tools.
  • It promotes respect for human diversity.
