This refers to the equality of rights, responsibilities, and opportunities between women and men. That is, regardless of the sex a person is born with, they must have the same rights, responsibilities, and opportunities to develop their full potential and live the life they desire. This means that men and women are equal.
The world has not yet achieved gender equality and, instead, it continues to be one of the key development goals. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development states that it is’not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world’.
The concept of gender equality highlights the oppressions, discriminations, and asymmetries of power that women and people with diverse gender identities with regards to the hegemonic and historically dominant masculine gender have suffered and continue to suffer. It recognizes that men, women, and other genders require differentiated policies to obtain a real equality.
